Going the extra mile:

"When I became an NQT induction manager, I had already mentored PGCE students in Geography so had some experience but I have felt that my mentoring skills have improved through the practice of using them with NQTs.

So far, I have had the chance to officially observe each of the 3 NQTs I am managing twice and meet with them in order to complete the paperwork necessary at the end of each term.

NQT mentoring is also about being available for support throughout the year not just when it comes to the paperwork.

The part of NQT mentoring I have enjoyed the most is the chance to observe other teachers in different subjects to my own. I have found this to be very valuable as I have been able to pick up on ideas that have been used by NQTs and adapt them for my own teaching.

Overall, NQT mentoring has generally been about providing a support role beyond each teacher's department."
